Revolutionizing How Architects and Designers Communicate Their Projects
Enscape offers a photo-realistic representation of projects based on the latest rendering techniques. Enscape runs parallel to CAD software or directly in virtual reality, for example the Oculus Rift.
Enscape has been in development since 2013 and has been successfully on the market since 2015. Our customers include companies from over 80 countries and 85% of the internationally renowned TOP100 architectural firms.
The Founders and Visionaries of Enscape
Thomas Willberger (left) and Moritz Luck (right) still have the same ambition and mission as at the beginning: to develop a real-time 3D rendering software, so that architects can carry out their projects in photorealistic quality, also in VR.
Our management team has a passion for real-time rendering and one thing in particular: sound experience in building successful companies!
What was the goal of your product / business idea?
In the years before Enscape’s founding, we already offered architects and project developers interactive real-time visualizations, which were made by hand on the basis of gaming engines. In doing so, we discovered that the step from planning data to the gaming engine is often too complex to be applied in everyday design. Many BIM models already have a high degree of detail, which would be lost during conversion processes. Therefore, we wanted to develop a software that gets the most out of the existing planning data and provides the designer real-time visualizations with little additional effort.
In discussions and at trade fairs we increasingly received the feedback from designers and architects that they perceived real-time visualization of their projects meaningful; however these opportunities were not always available to them due to expensive iteration loops with agencies or missing project budgets.
It was also very important to us that our software provided actual real-time visualization of outstanding quality and that the architects could maintain complete control over their projects.
We want our users to achieve brilliant results that would otherwise only have been possible through a rendering professional with several man-hours to budget.
Which challenges had to be overcome?
The AEC market has an existing reseller structure its own dynamics, where we first of all had to find out what worked well for us.
Often our product development is a balancing act: Enscape should achieve great results quickly and easily, since the product is tailored to its target group of architects. However, there are also users who want to configure every detail. Here we must find a middle ground and develop a feeling for which adjustments are necessary and which parameters are identical among all users.
What important steps / milestones have been taken?
At the very beginning we started with 6 people in a small room at the university. It was an indescribable feeling when we were able to rent our first official office. And just a few months later we moved again, to the Erbprinzenstraße. In August 2018 we moved into the new building due to the strong growth.
We usually accomplish our goals in series of many small steps: Sometimes we release a great new version that supports new design software. Or we launch a new campaign to shows the great results our users are getting. There are many successful projects, small and large, that mean a lot to us.
What events shaped you?
When the company was still quite young, I was alone at a trade fair to present Enscape at a booth. Of course, you are a bit unsure and curious about the upcoming feedback in such situations. To my surprise, many people already knew about Enscape and were thrilled with it. One user even wanted to take a selfie with me. That was very funny and showed me that we are getting better known in the market.
Which feelings, thoughts and doubts accompanied you?
You learn over the years and so gain security and confidence. However, before every release we are still nervous whether our customers will like it. In order to collect feedback early, we also offer our users pre-release testing of so-called preview versions. Our entire team strives to understand and help our users. But a bit of nervousness remains every time we trigger the “magic button” before a release.
What is the situation today? What has changed?
We still have the same ambition and mission as at the beginning: to develop a real-time 3D rendering software, so that architects can navigate their projects in photorealistic quality, also in the VR.
We have learned a lot with each new release, some of which has already been implemented and now we want to further increase the added value for our customers, in order to further expand our market position.
Of course, there are always challenges to master. We continue to receive ideas and wishes from our customers and can also proactively fulfil some of them. At the same time, we also make sure that the development of our product makes sense and that we continue to focus on our core competence.
The exchange with our community is particularly important to us. Whether new trends and future developments in the field of BIM or design, we areon the cutting edge. And of course our development agenda also benefits from a lively exchange. However, I must admit that we attach at least as much importance to breaking new technical ground. This in turn benefits the further development of our product, which sets us apart from other solutions.
This technical development is also driven internally, of course, and our feedback culture has proven itself on several occasions. With each new colleague we get new impulses and ideas that help us all move forward. And we are only at the beginning of our journey!
Meet the Team
Our software developers are working on making the completely self-developed OpenGL 4.x based real-time render engine even faster, maintaining the C++ code and achieving even more realistic images with techniques such as real-time path tracing or order independent transparency. Or they program in C# and take care of the integration into existing CAD programs and of course use other languages such as C++, Ruby, Powershell, Python or MSBuild.
Our colleagues are more than just esteemed contacts for our worldwide customers: consulting, webinars, technical support and also the creation of volume contracts are part of the daily tasks of the team. In addition, we develop concepts, write helpful blog posts and look after our key accounts. In short: our customer service team is THE first point of contact for our customers!
In order to reach customers all over the world, our marketing team uses the most diverse channels. From social media and display campaigns to e-mail and trade fair marketing – it will certainly never get boring here! In order to open up new product fields and address customers, they put pen to paper to develop new marketing concepts. Whether it’s creating an affiliate strategy or designing a new product video – creative minds are always welcome!
Human resources, finance, event management or office management – the tasks are as varied as they are exciting but above all one thing: indispensable for the smooth running of the Enscape everyday life! With vision and organizational talent, they master the daily challenges of everyday office life, inspire new team members or make sure that the bookkeeping is correct. Especially important: the planning of Enscape team events such as laser tag days, barbecues or sports events.
Before Enscape, I only knew strictly hierarchically organized large companies with unchangeable processes. The refreshingly open and humane company culture at Enscape directly excited me and convinced me that I could look forward to the new week here every Monday.
I've been with Enscape since the beginning. And I'm still excited about our product and the technology involved. This energy is contagious and keeps me coming back every day with joy.
Enscape constantly offers me new challenges where I can apply what I have learned and where I can learn new things. For example, I have the opportunity to do UX and UI design for software AND web development. Everyone is open to new ideas and interesting conversations take place during lunch breaks. A really nice togetherness!
For me, there is nothing better than being jointly responsible for building a successful company! We take on responsibility and get the necessary freedom to shape the future of Enscape.
Since starting Enscape we continuously follow one goal: allow everyone to experience architectural projects as if they were already built, by developing a photorealistic and easy to use 3D walkthrough with one click.
